POMMARD 1998
One year full of promises
Climatic conditions of the year and vegetative cycle
After short cold weather periods in January and February, higher temperatures in March helped the vine to start its vegetative cycle. During the first days of spring, this nice weather was interrupted by one cold and rainy period.
In May the return of a warmer time started a fast development of the vegetation. A slight drop in temperatures then slowed down the end of flowering.
During the summer, in general hot and dry, hail storms caused limited damage.
Maturation of the grapes and grape harvest
In August, very high temperatures caused a fast ripening and a promising beginning of maturation. The rains of September were fortunately concentrated over the first and last days of the month. In general, the grape harvest proceeded under the sun in very good conditions.
As always, the search for optimum maturity was for the vine-makers one of the decisive factors in the choice of the harvest date.
The grapes, gathered, often required a sorting because of the more or less important presence of botrytis according to the area.
In general, the average contents of sugar were of a good level with a satisfactory acidity.
The first grapes were cut on September 10, confirming a rather early year.
The volume of harvest is in the average of the last years.
Wine making and characters of the wines
Year 1998 is characterized by a certain heterogeneity in the style of the wines.
Mid-November, the white wines are medium dry and expressive. They are characterized by their elegance highlighted by a good acidity.
The red wines have a beautiful color. They are characterized in the mouth by a structure balanced with a strong fruity flavor, supported by soft and harmonious tannins, which give them a promising future.
